Many people immigrate to the USA for a better life. People have been immigrating since the 1800's. Some of the groups who migrated in the 1800's were Italians, French, Irish, German, Jews & Dutch. They left there country with the intention of sending money back to their families and eventually return home. Some of the reasons why they left their country were high taxes, soil erosion and earthquakes. Throughout the years people migrated more and more especially in the 1840's-50's two of the groups that migrated the most were Irish because they were fleeing the potato famine and Germans fleeing crop failures. Although migration was increasing, it decreased in the 1860s due to the civil war. It rose again in the 1870's. Also in the early nineteenth century chinise started migrating to the western states seeking for work. Unlike the europeans who traveled in family groups, the immigrants from china were primarily males who traveled by themselves. Very few chinese womans migrated during this period and the few who did became prostitutes. The chinese male immigrants who emigrated ended up working on railroads, farmlands and mines.
