The age of "New Immigrants"

Between 1880-1920 almost 24 millions immigrants arrived in the United States. These New Immigrants were from Southern and Eastern European such as Italy, Greece, Poland, Hungry and Russia. These "New Immigrants" came to the United States for a variety of reasons. Some of the reasons were low wages, unemployment, disease, and religious persecutions. These immigrants were inspired to come to america by its reputation of "The land of Liberty". These "New Immigrants" fleeing poverty and persecution faced difficulties in adapting into the american culture. Most couldn't speak english, some came from non-democratic government and were often distrustful of government. A lot of them created small ethnic communities where they preserved the culture of their homelands. In those communities they maintained their culture by opening store, restaurants, schools and churches. Although they were creating their own communities this didn't protect them from being discriminated against. They worked in growing factories and poorly paid jobs such as construction and sewing.
